Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Rotational work on weekends and holidays is required. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Oversees facility operations, vivarium equipment, and animal laboratory processes. Directly supervises 6-15 husbandry personnel. Assists the Facility Manager in the management of the animal care and husbandry program in accordance with the regulations and guidelines of Animal Welfare Act, the Public Health Service, and University policies to assure a quality animal care program that supports the research and teaching at Washington University. The supervisor is responsible for the direct supervision and performance management of the animal care and cage wash staff in their assigned area. They are responsible for ensuring that animal care duties are performed in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and that University and divisional policies are followed. This position plays a leadership role within the Division of Comparative Medicine. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Plan, direct, supervise and coordinate the daily activities of the Animal Care Staff responsible for the daily care of research animals. Manage up to 15 direct reports, including interviewing, on-the-job training, performance management and evaluation, career development discussions, and oversight of employee work schedules and attendance. Ensure that the established SOPs are properly executed and department policies are followed. Schedule daily activities and distribute workload to staff. 2. Train the husbandry staff on SOPs and in daily duties. Accountable for monitoring and managing employee work performance and associated files. 3. Provide the PI and lab staff facility walk through and barrier training. Supervisor may assist with technical procedures, including animal identification, breeding, and euthanasia. 4. Conduct or oversee census and quality assurance activities in the facility. 5. Perform additional duties as directed by the facility manager or the department. Required Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience in a laboratory animal facility or an equivalent combination of education, AALAS certification, and laboratory animal or supervisory experience totaling seven years. * AALAS certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level (ALAT) and certification at the LAT level or higher within two years. Preferred Qualifications * Bachelor’s degree. * AALAS certification (LAT). * Three years of experience in laboratory animal care. * One year of supervisory experience. * Ability to comprehend written and spoken terms used in a biomedical research environment. * Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions from veterinary, supervisory and research staff. * Conscientious attitude and concern for quality. * Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate leadership abilities. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $40,706 - $54,933 annually.
