Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Graphic Designer is responsible for developing, in consultation with faculty and staff members, the visual concepts and graphics for assigned research-related communications publications (both print and digital/web-based), including websites and graphics for grant proposals, manuscripts, scientific presentations, brochures, flyers, newsletters, and others.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Creates high-quality graphics, prepares rough sketches of design possibilities based on grant proposals and research manuscripts; prepares sophisticated, comprehensive models of proposed designs to be used in scientific materials and presentations to enhance reader’s understanding; assists with information architecture and navigation of websites from a design perspective; creates web-ready artwork and html files for websites; specifies typography; specifies ink and paper combinations; produces electronic files for printing; creates illustrations and drawings; prepares photographic suggestions for publications; art directs photography and video shoots as needed; crops and sizes photographs; performs photo color correction and retouching of photos as needed; reviews and corrects proofs.
  2. Presents suggested designs to faculty or staff members at the Department.
  3. Keeps abreast of developments in website design, updates departmental website, maintains departmental database of funding opportunities.
  4. Writes lay summaries of research for use on the departmental website and departmental communication materials; assists the departmental Scientific Editor in editing research abstracts and other short documents.
  5. Performs any other appropriate tasks as assigned by the Vice Chair of Research.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or Bachelor of Fine Arts or the equivalent in experience; a strong portfolio that demonstrates (1) a range of exceptional design skills in both print and web communications, and (2) knowledge of graphic interface design; advanced knowledge and expertise with PhotoShop, Illustrators, web standards, HTML5, CSS, PowerPoint; at least 3 to 5 years of professional experience in conceptualizing, designing, and producing integrated communications and publications, including websites, electronic communications, and printed materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A doctorate degree in a life science field and experience in graphic design.
  • Ability to communicate well both in writing and orally with a variety of individuals, including faculty, administrators and other staff at the School of Medicine and University, as well as with all types of contractors associated with web, digital, and creative production.
  • A solid understanding of and commitment to professional public relations standards.
  • A commitment to work within the University’s established organizational structure.
  • A commitment to independent higher education in general and Washington University in particular.
  • Established competency in graphic and web design software programs.
  • Ability to understand complex life sciences writing.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to edit scientific abstracts.
  • Incredible attention to detail and accuracy in all phases of work.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and MS PowerPoint.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $51,292 - $66,684 annually.
