Washington University of St. Louis Ophthalmic Assistant - Ophthalmology Clinical Practice - 51852 in St. Louis, Missouri

Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Ophthalmology Clinical Practice. The position is located at the Center for Outpatient Health. This position is for the Medical School Campus. This position may be required to travel between the Children's Specialty Care Center and St. Louis Children's Hospital up to 50% of the time. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: Provides technical and administrative support to the ophthalmologists and optometrists. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Perform visual diagnostic testing, including, but not limited to, visual fields, tonometry, biometry, visual evoked potentials, fundus photos and optical coherence tomography. 2. Complete a comprehensive work-up for the ophthalmologists and optometrists. 3. Prepare a detailed medical patient history. 4. Explain and educated patients on physician’s diagnosis and instructions. 5. Assist physicians with minor surgical procedures and perform visual diagnostic testing. 6. Answer patient phone messages. 7. Maintain CPR or Basic Life Support certification. 8. Help foster our service culture of positivity and inclusion by maintaining a positive attitude with co-workers and excellent customer service. 9. Cross train to cover front desk as needed. Required Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent high school certification. * Two years of experience working in a medical office. Preferred Qualifications * Completion of JCAHPO’s home study course within six months of employment. * Great communication, excellent customer service, organization and computer skills. * Experience working with patients and knowledge of medical terminology. * Prior administrative or technical support to an ophthalmologist in a clinical setting. * Extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, medical terminology and abbreviations. * Ability to express a caring attitude while performing tasks required with accuracy and efficiency. * Ability to maintain patient information in a strict confidential. * Familiarity with Microsoft Office software. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $14.44 - $17.70 per hour.
