Job Type/Schedule This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Typical working hours are 7 am to 4 pm. Once the full team of 3 NPs is in place, alternative work schedules may be considered, including some weekend time. Occasional late or early hours may occur depending upon specific patient care issues. Department Name/Job Location This position is in the Department of Neurology. The NP will work primarily on the neurology inpatient areas of Barnes Jewish Hospital, including 11400/11500 and 10500. Essential Functions POSITION SUMMARY: The Adult Neurology Nurse Practitioner will be primarily responsible for caring for a subset of patients on the neurology inpatient services, working in collaboration with faculty attending physicians and neurology residents. A team of 3 Nurse Practitioners will alternate primarily between the General Neurology service and Stroke Neurology service. Periodically the NP will assist with caring for patients admitted to the Epilepsy monitoring unit. When on the General Neurology service the NP will provide care for elective/scheduled admissions to the Neurology in collaboration with the ward service or private neurology attending. The NP will also assume responsibility for a subset of neurology patients requiring longitudinal care during the hospitalization. NPs will serve as the primary team member managing the care of their assigned patients, and may assist in the care of other patients on the Neurology Inpatient services. NPs will play an important role in discharge planning and patient and family education. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Coordinate elective admissions to the neurology inpatient services. 2. Provide direct patient care for neurology inpatients under the supervision of neurology attendings, either as primary team member or in collaboration with residents. Including writing admission orders, performing admission history and physical and managing patient care. 3. Coordinate discharge planning and education for neurology inpatients. 4. Establish a system and coordinate elective/scheduled admissions to the Neurology service, including admission from private neurology attendings admitting patients to the hospital but wishing to remain the patient’s responsible hospital physician. 5. Work with the neurology subspecialty services and the head of the inpatient service to establish protocols for elective admissions. 6. Care for patients on the General Neurology and Stroke inpatient services, in cooperation with neurology faculty attendings and residents, to provide primary patient care, patient education and discharge planning. 7. Perform procedures including lumbar punctures, skin biopsies and needle muscle biopsies. Required Qualifications * Current MSN with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program. * REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION: Missouri and/or Illinois APN licensure as applicable by state of work location, or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire; Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty. Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements). Preferred Qualifications * Acute care NPs are preferred. * Able to work both independently and as part of the neurological care team. * Excellent organizational skills as well as excellent clinical skills and people skills, able to educate patients and interested in self-education as well. * Computer skills and able to work with electronic medical records. * Excellent teamwork skills. * Well organized. * Ability to make and initiate decisions independently. * Ability to prioritize tasks and work with minimum supervision. * Experience with word processing programs and Excel. * Good written and communication skills. * Able to act professionally and with discretion. Salary Range The hiring range for this position is $78,915 - $142,084 annually.
