This position is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week.

This position is in the Department of Ophthalmology Clinical Practice. This position is for the Medical School Campus.

Essential Functions

POSITION SUMMARY:

Provides advanced administrative and technical support to an ophthalmologist in a clinical setting.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Must be able to perform all duties of the ophthalmic assistant in addition to the duties listed below
  2. Performs kinetic and static visual fields test (Goldman & Humphrey)
  3. Assists with the clinical work up of patients including a detailed patient history
  4. Helps patients understand general office evaluation and physician instructions
  5. Performs gross refractions, keratometry, tonography and tonometry
  6. Inserts and removes patient contact lenses when necessary; also provides contact lens instruction to patients
  7. Performs BAT (Brightness acutity test) glare testing and PAM (Potential acutity meter) testing
  8. Performs A-Scan ultrasound testing
  9. Assists physicians with minor surgical procedures
  10. Performs OCT and fundus/external photos

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, completion of the AAO Home study course with 1 year supervised ophthalmologic office experience.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, medical terminology and abbreviations.
  • Excellent communication and patient care skills.
  • Must be able to express a caring attitude while performing tasks required with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ability to maintain patient information in a strict confidential manner.

Salary Range

The hiring range for this position is $17.58 - $21.98 per hour.

Position may require travel to all clinical sites, South County CAM, Center for Outpatient health, McMillan Building University Eye Services and Barnes West County as needed for staffing.
