Role Purpose:

Under general supervision of the Lab Manager, collects samples for, performs and interprets laboratory tests in all sections of the laboratory to assist clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Operates and maintains instrumentation according to established procedures and protocols. Serves as a resource person for other laboratory staff. Serves customers in a courteous and timely manner. May perform supervisory and technical oversight duties under the direction of the Lab Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs, records and monitors quality control as appropriate. Solves quality problems and reports unresolved problems appropriately.

  • Accurately performs and reports laboratory tests in a timely manner. Notifies nursing unit or physician of abnormal results when appropriate.

  • Actively participates in the orientation of new employees. Provides the attention and information they need to succeed.

  • Appropriately reviews and summarizes section QC, maintenance, and other records. Submits them for review by the Lab Manager and Pathologist.

  • Participates in proficiency testing programs as required.

  • Accurately completes daily surveillance of laboratory records as assigned.

  • Preforms other duties as assigned by Lab Manager.

  • Keeps department policy and procedure manuals up to date (with an annual review as a minimum) and informs staff (all shifts) of P & P changes or problems in their area(s) of responsibility.

  • Properly identifies patients without exception (using 2 identifiers) prior to specimen collection. Properly collects, labels, processes and preserves specimens in a timely manner.

  • Efficiently uses unplanned periods of free time (i.e.. when no workload is present) to clean, stock, organize, calibrate, order necessary supplies (or notifies the person responsible for ordering them), performs section duties, etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree.

  • Meets CLIA requirements for performing high complexity testing.
