GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThis is advanced professional nursing work directing and supervising staff of an inpatient detoxification unit for persons who are intoxicated or experiencing withdrawal from substances. The detoxification registered nurse ensures that inpatient consumers are medically stable (including the initiation and tapering of medication used for the treatment of substance use withdrawal); assessed for adequate bio-psychosocial stability; and that linkage to and engagement in other appropriate outpatient services is facilitated. Duties include the supervision of professional and non-professional staff who delivers detoxification services. Activities include: coordinating admissions, conducting nursing assessments; developing and supervising nurses LPN's and attendants who deliver individualized patient care; and administering medications. This employee performs work with independence within established nursing standards and procedures. Work is under the general review of the program manager who reviews work for conformance with established agency policies and procedures, leaving considerable latitude for independent judgment and discretion. Practice supervision is provided by a medical director who reviews work for conformance with accepted health care and nursing standards of practice.EXAMPLES OF WORKWork may include, but is not limited to, the following examples:Remains alert during working hours; attends work as scheduled, and complies with attendance policies.Directs and monitors nursing and detoxification services to ensure compliance with professional, contractual, legal, regulatory, certification and agency policy requirements. Supervises activities of assigned staff ensuring professional nursing and detoxification care is provided. Supervision includes both direct observation as well as systematic review of program and nursing records. Maintains safe, orderly, secure environment of care.Ensures that bio-psychosocial assessments are performed and a plan of care developed for each consumer utilizing input from the consumer, family and health team. Implements plan through direct care, coordination, delegation and supervision of the activities of the health care/detox team. Evaluates the consumer's and family's response to care and teaching, and revises the plan of care as neededProvides and supervises professional nursing services including nursing assessments, medication administration, and nursing care in accordance with professional practices and physician orders.Implements medical protocols established by medical director. Consults with medical director regarding new admissions and consumer treatment needs, and reports medical concerns and emergencies immediately.Conducts nursing assessment and identifies health risk factors. Develops and implements nursing plan; monitors care and patient progress; reviews nursing charts and directly observes patients, ensuring appropriate interventions that contribute to care.Ensures that all medications, services, concerns, and notes are documented in consumer record in legible, timely, and accurate manner. Documents describe nursing care, medications and any side effects, and observations and interventions that contribute to care.Ensures program activities encourage consumers to continue in services that support abstinence.Represents and/or serves as a liaison for the assigned area of responsibility. Coordinates program admissions and maintains appropriate level of communication, cooperation, and response to hospitals, police, courts, probation and parole, public administrator, and others who refer consumers to care.Participates in quality improvement process, team meetings, in service training, client and case reviews.Maintains confidentiality of consumers in accordance with federal and state regulations.Performs other related work as assigned.EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESThorough knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, and standardsWorking kno
