As defined by the American College of Surgeons ACS, surgical assistants provide aid in exposure, hemostatsis, closure, and other interoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safer operation with optimal results for the patient. In addition to intraoperative duties, the surgical assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties under the supervision of the attending surgeon and my not under any circumstance be performed independently by the Surgical First Assist. The physician must remain within the surgery department to be considered readily available and providing supervision. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Company Service Standards.Qualifications: Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent Graduate of Accredited Surgical technology programLicensure: In addition to requirements of the CST position, it is required that the Certified Scrub Tech First Assist earn, with in 1 year, the Certified Surgical Assist CSA and pass an examination approved by either the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting NBSTSA or the Council for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs CAAHEP. CSAs maintain certification by earning 50 hours of approved Continuing Education in a two-year period or by successfully retaking the certifying exam. Licensure: NBSTSA or NSAA National Surgical Assistant AssociationExperience: The ST First Assist must demonstrate application of anatomy, physiology, and other cognitive education in the use of surgical instrumentation on tissue as well as the handling of instruments 4 years experience as a certified scrub tech 2 years experience assisting Surgeon proctorship of first assist with completed and signed approved competenciesCertifications: First Assistant Certification required within one year of hire/transfer.
