Description
Day ShiftThe Physician Office Medical Assistant will perform administrative and clinical duties under the direction of the Provider, Nurse and the Office Manager. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, and answering multiline telephones as needed. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, and other types of screenings as necessaryBegin
Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight and height
Assist patients to the examination rooms and prepare them for the physician
Record patients’ medical history, perform and records patient’s vital statistics and information such as test results in their medical records
Prepare and administer medications as ordered by a provider; only after the incumbent successfully completes the medication administration exam during orientation
Collect tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing
Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physician instructions to patients
Help physicians during patient exams and treatments, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as dressing changes, suture removal and gynecological exam set up
Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping rooms neat, clean and stocked with supplies
Assist patients needing ambulatory assistance as necessary
Dispose of contaminated supplies and bio-hazardous waste according to hospital policy
Operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests
Stock supplies in exam rooms
Manages multi-line phone system and documents phone calls and problems in the EMR
Assist and perform diagnostic procedures and treatments as ordered (point of care of testing, electrocardiograms, and assisting with minor surgical procedures)
Obtain insurance pre-certifications for procedures and treatments
Assure safe patient care by following and adhering to CMS, Meaningful Use, Joint Commission and Hospital policy and procedures in all daily practices
Assists with entering billing, collections and insurance claim data
Make appointments for tests or referrals to other medical specialists
Schedules appointments using the computer system as well as understanding how to operate EMR systems as required by site
Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department electronic health records
Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs in the electronic health record system
Maintains a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information; responding to requests; participating in team problem-solving methods
Will operate other office automation equipment (i.e. scanner, fax, printer and copier).
Prepares and maintains medical records and completes clinic prep. Charting in the electronic medical record as necessary
The Medical Assistant shall be responsible for compliance of TJC and office practice standards
Perform other job duties as requested by the Provider, Nurse or Practice Manager and/or possibly be assigned to other local/satellite clinical locations as needed
The Medical Assistant may also be trained to set up and assist the provider with:
Immunizations – after successful completion of medication administration exam
Injections
Trigger point injections
Joint Injections/Aspirations
Biopsies
Excision & Drainage
I & D
Ingrown Toenail Removal
Abscess removal
Mole/Wart removal – use of liquid Nirtogen
Suture / Staple placement / removal
Lab draws
UA capture
Throat culture / swab
Pap / Pelvic set up
Electrocardiogram (EKG)
Become
Basic Cardiac Life Support
High School graduate
Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant/Specialists program is preferred
Certification as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is required at the time of hire
Must be able to read, write and speak English
